Season 1999-2000

63RD SEASON

SEASON REPORT

The 1999-2000 season proved to be a mixed one. The 1st team reached the last eight of the Sussex Junior Cup, the semi-finals of the Hastings F A Junior Cup and were in with a chance of promotion until the last few weeks of the season. The second team progressed to the semi-finals of the Hastings F A Lower Divisions Cup but only avoided relegation on goal difference while the third team continued the aim of bringing young players to the club.

1ST TEAM

Due to cup commitments and losing several matches to the weather, the 1st team only played two league games before 22nd January. With the successful runs in the Sussex Junior Cup and Hastings Junior Cup, they ended the season playing only one less match in cup competitions than in the entire league programme. This undoubtedly caught up with the side when points dropped at the end of the season, particularly against Punnetts Town and Robertsbridge United, cost the team promotion.

The season was an enjoyable one for the first team and in reaching the last eight of the Sussex Junior Cup out of an original entry of over one hundred and sixty teams, progressed the furthest in a County Cup competition since the Club won the Junior Cup in 1963-64. Victories were achieved against Robsack Raiders (11-1), Westfield III (5-0 after a 3-3 draw), Langney Sports III (4-2), Grenadier (5-3) and Ansty Rangers II (3-2) before losing 2-0 to a very useful Faygate United side.

The club were fortunate to obtain sponsorship from Rush, Witt and Wilson, the local estate agent who kindly provided the first team with a new kit.

2ND TEAM

With it once again being necessary for the East Sussex League to reorganise the divisions, the second team were moved up to Division Five so it was understandable that they struggled in the league all season, winning only three matches. A further six draws meant the 2nd XI finished level on points with the bottom two sides but thanks to high scoring victories over Sandhurst (8-1) and Blacklands (6-0) avoided relegation on goal difference.

The 2nd team did better in cup games, reaching the semi-final of the Hastings F A Lower Divisions Cup which included a 12-0 victory over Robertsbridge United II in the second round. They suffered from losing players to the first team and also the regular goals of Sacha Patterson who moved to Eastbourne in November and played only one further game. Sacha, despite making only five starts and two substitute appearances, scored 16 goals including 7 in the cup victory at Robertsbridge and was joint leading goal scorer along with Steve Fuller. Duane Daltrey was 2nd XI Manager’s Player of the Year.

3RD TEAM

It was pleasing that the club were able to reach agreement with Guestling Parish Council to hire the pitch at Guestling Playing Field for the third team to play their home games. Looking at the playing record, the 3rd XI would appear to have had a disappointing season in Division Eight, however the main aims of the side was to bring on and encourage young players who would hopefully be the future of the club and also to provide football for those who simply wanted to enjoy a game on a Saturday afternoon. These aims were achieved this season with the side containing several promising young players who would be pushing for places in the 1st and 2nd teams.

Troy Whyborne top scored with 9 goals, Ashley Bloomfield was Players’ Player of the Season and David Bolton took the Manager’s Player of the Year trophy.

VETERANS

The Veterans had another disappointing year, losing their opening two fixtures to the Junior Club Tackleway Veterans and Hollington United Veterans before a convincing 8-0 win over Hooe Sports in the final match saw them finish in third place in their group.

SEASON AWARDS

GENERAL MATTERS

The pre-season bonding expedition had a slight variation this year with a trip to the Isle of Wight where players Mike Beaumont, Ian Carter, Dave Harding and Martin Tytherleigh along with Vic Carter and Vince Fernandez cycled round the island while Bob Baker and David Mayne spent the afternoon at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway!
