2010 Tournament

THE 3RD ICKLESHAM CASUALS GOLF TOURNAMENT

It was a slightly smaller field that assembled at Littlestone Warren for the third Icklesham Casuals Golf Tournament. Work and holidays took away the Tiltmans, Mark Stace, Tim Linch, Dan Marsh and Steve Beale.

Jack Brown, who hadn’t swung a club in 20 odd years came into the field though he took a long time to get to Littlestone deciding to go via Dymchurch, Hythe and most of southern Kent.

An innovation this year – thanks to Wayne Bumstead – was the Golden Ball competition which ensured there was a team feel for each group that went out. The basic rules were that different members of the group had to play with the team’s yellow ball on each hole. The score in points for that individual on that hole counted and the total points over 18 holes was the team score. When and if the yellow ball got lost that ended the scoring for that team (see later!).

THE COMPETITORS

Wayne opened proceedings by hooking his drive onto the driving range, He was accompanied by Richard Forrest and Ollie Beaumont (though both kept their drives on the fairway). George Potter, Jack Brown, David Mayne and Bob Baker then went off next with varying degrees of success. Mike Beaumont, Chris Baker and Keith Swallow brought up the rear.

The course was hard and fast and if you stayed out of the rough then you were ok. A big “if” for some…..

The opening group of three finished about an hour before the sluggish group of four. Wayne and Richard were “well oiled” by the time the others came in – though fortunately Ollie Beaumont stayed off the sauce.

The Golden Ball results were telling – Wayne, Richard and Ollie scored 31 points and the group of four scored a disappointing five having lost their ball on the fourth hole – a short par 3! The winners of the team competition were Mike, Chris and Keith who kept their ball on the fairway (generally!) and ended up with 37 points.
