Season 1994-95

58TH SEASON

SEASON REPORT

The fifty-eighth season overall proved to be an enjoyable one. There were some problems and disappointments but the first team achieved their highest position in the East Sussex League Premier Division and the second team reached the semi-final of the Hastings F A Lower Divisions Cup with some notable victories on the way. A good team spirit was maintained in both sides with the 2nd XI finishing in third place in the League Sportsmanship Trophy with an average mark of 84.67 out of 100.

Home matches were played at Pannel Lane in Pett, previously used by Stamco for their County League team, while the improvements were carried out to the pitch at Icklesham Recreation Ground.

1ST TEAM

The 1st XI finished in sixth place in the Premier Division, taking points off every other side in the division with the exception of Wadhurst Toc H. This included an opening day draw against champions Hollington United, who dropped only seven points all season, a home victory over runners-up Polegate and a 10-0 drubbing of third placed Rock-a-Nore. The defence performed well with only the top two sides having a better goals against record and the team was one of only three sides to have a positive goal difference.

The record in cup competitions was not as good. The third round of the A F A Intermediate Cup was reached with a 6-3 victory over Glyn Old Boys II and a 9-2 win against Southgate Olympic II but in all other cups, the 1st team went out at the first attempt. The game with Southgate Olympic II at Pannel Lane was attended by Amateur Football Alliance Life Vice-President, Ben Robbins who wrote after the match to thank for the kind and hospitable manner in which he and his wife were treated by the club.

Steve Fuller shoots for goal

Again Bob Baker and Steve Beale did a good job in running the side. There were joint winners of the 1st XI Players’ Player of the Year award in Martin Tytherleigh and Andy Vickers with the Manager’s Player of the Year trophy going to Neil Pincombe. Steve Fuller with 19 goals was leading goal scorer followed by Dale Glazier with 10. Bob Baker started his five hundredth first team game during the season and a special award was made to mark this achievement.

2ND TEAM

The second team once more ended just below halfway in Division Eight. The side conceded only 24 league goals during the season which was a club record and only one more than the division champions. In fact only ten other teams throughout the eleven divisions of the League let in fewer goals. Goal scoring was the problem though with only 22 league goals being scored.

2nd Team v Old Town Eastbourne II – Saturday, 22nd October 1994

The team suffered yet again with inconsistency. On their day the 2nd XI were a match for any side in the division as well as teams from higher leagues. This was proved by reaching the semi-final of the Hastings F A Lower Divisions Cup with wins over Ticehurst II, Pebsham Sibex III in the first two round followed by a defeat of Robertsbridge United II from Division Seven. The semi-final was only lost 2-1 against Travaux II who were runners-up in Division Seven and the match could have gone either way. The team lost in the Hastings Junior Cup, only after a replay, to Silverhill Rangers from Division Six.

The spirit in the second team was good throughout the season. Young goalkeeper Rob Wiley was deservedly voted Players’ Player of the Year as well as winning the Bert Glazier Cup. Mick Booker, 2nd XI captain, picked up the Manager’s Player of the Year award. Gareth Collier was top scorer with 13 goals in all competitions.

VETERANS

After the previous season, this year proved to be a disappointing one for the veterans. Due to a number of reasons the team was only able to field ten men in the A F A Veterans Cup game away to Winchmore Hill Veterans and went down 8-0. In the local veterans competition there was a reduced entry and with other withdrawals following in their group, the side met Battle Rangers Veterans in a one-off match for a place in the semi-finals. This was won 4-1 but they then lost the semi-final tie 2-0 to Hollington United Veterans although not without having the chances to win the game.

ICKLESHAM

SIX-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT

Icklesham Recreation Ground – Saturday, 16th July 1994

The Six-a-Side Tournament again took place in conjunction with the Icklesham Fete on Saturday, 16th July with eleven teams competing.

Neither of the Icklesham Casuals sides covered themselves in glory this year with both failing to get beyond the group stage.

It was Westfield ‘A’ and the Robin Hood who contested a closely fought final with Westfield ‘A’ taking the Shield thanks to the only goal of the game.

GENERAL MATTERS

The club was saddened by the death towards the end of the season of Charlie Baker. Charlie was treasurer of the club for thirty six years from 1951 to 1987 as well as making nearly fifty appearances. He would be missed by the older players who knew him.

The long awaited pitch and drainage improvements were carried out as planned during the season and whilst not without some problems, it was hoped that the ground would be ready for use again in September. The removal of the undulations which had been on the pitch for many years would be a vast improvement to the playing area and hopefully also be of much benefit to the other users of the Recreation Ground. A massive thank you was due to Steve Beale and all the others who helped in arranging for the work to be completed and to Martin Tytherleigh for all his hard work in leading the fundraising to enable the project to go ahead. As well as all the funds provided by the club towards the cost, a grant of £500 was provided by Rother District Council Community Projects Grant Scheme and a grant of £1750 was obtained from the Football Association Grant Aid Scheme. The club was extremely grateful for both these grants as well as to the Sussex County Football Association for all their support with the grant application to the F A.

August 6th 1994 saw the first expedition of the Icklesham Casuals Male Bonding Club when Michael Beaumont, Christian Kipps, Steve Fuller, Tony Forster and Martin Tytherleigh along with two associate members decided that they would climb Mount Snowdon raising over £300 for the Pitch and Pavilion Fund.

A full report on the climbing trip was among the features in the fourth edition of the club fanzine ‘About Time Too Fuller’ which was issued in April 1995.

Keith Swallow, having played A F A football with Old Tiffinians in London before joining the club in 1993 after moving to Guestling following a job relocation, wrote an article about Icklesham Casuals which was published in the Winter edition of the A F A Record.

Keith Swallow’s article in the A F A Winter Record

Finally, and on a somewhat disappointing note, despite the second team finishing in third place in the Sportsmanship Cup, the season saw a sending-off and six cautions between the two sides. Whilst recognising that with the constant rule changes and instructions to referees, the possibility of picking up a booking has increased substantially, for a club which has prided itself on it’s disciplinary record and reputation for sportsmanship throughout the first fifty eight years, it was hoped would not be repeated.

The Annual General Meeting took place in the pavilion at Icklesham Recreation Ground on Friday, 16th June 1995 at 8.15 p m.
