Season 2008-09

72ND SEASON

SEASON REPORT

The club’s 72nd season had its highs and lows but overall was an enjoyable one for all teams. It was another wet winter resulting in a number of postponements and heavy fixture congestion towards the end of the season. The year saw the 1st team winning the East Sussex League Sportsmanship Trophy for the first time, the setting up of the club’s website and the inaugural Icklesham Casuals Golf Tournament taking place.

1ST TEAM

The first XI under the management of Martin Tytherleigh and captaincy of Sean Baker started off slowly but improved as the season progressed. There were fears that the large number of matches at the end of the campaign would take its toll on ageing limbs but rather than this having a detrimental effect the side put together a remarkable run of form ending with four successive wins to achieve a third place finish in the First Division of the East Sussex League with ten wins from twenty two games. This was the best placing for a number of years.

In a league where Q Ball and Polegate Town were comfortably the best two teams, the remaining sides were fairly level with only three points separating third and eighth position. The team had some very competitive games with the double being achieved over both Wheatsheaf (Willingdon) and Ninfield United and other notable victories were against Athletico, Bexhill Amateur Athletic Club, Catsfield and Hollington United II. Disappointing defeats came against Mountfield United, both home and away and at home to bottom club Ticehurst.

In cup competitions the side won through a round in each of the A F A Intermediate Cup, the Hastings Junior Cup and the Sussex Junior Cup but went out narrowly after extra time to Polegate Town in the first round of the Wisdens Challenge Cup.

Dave Pugh was top scorer with 28 goals, scoring in 19 of the 28 games he played and was unanimously voted as 1st XI Players’ Player of the Year. Steve Pugh netted 15 times and Phil Badrock also reached double figures with 16 goals while both Kristian Fitz-Hugh and Todd Fitz-Hugh hardly missed a game. The team was strengthened mid-way through the season by the return of Gavin Moor, who made a great difference in the middle of the park and earned the Manager‘s Player of the Year award. The last two games saw a 9-0 victory over Ticehurst with Steve Pugh scoring six of the goals and Sean Baker showing another string to his bow with a faultless performance in goal followed by a 6-2 win against Crowhurst, the highlight being Sean Baker’s goal from the halfway line.

One notable achievement of which the club was extremely proud was the first team winning the East Sussex Football League Sportsmanship Trophy. This was based on marks given by referees throughout the season and was competed for by all eighty one teams in the League. The 1st XI was top from the start to the end of the season with an average mark of 8.74 out of 10. The second team finished in fourteenth place, also with a very high average mark. The 1st team were rewarded with the trophy and a cheque for £100 at the League’s presentation evening.

2ND TEAM

Having been promoted the previous season, the second team consolidated in Division Four and finished in a very creditable fifth position with nine wins from twenty league matches. After an excellent start, the side suffered a poor run of results. This was largely due to the loss of several key players – Tim Hambridge was promoted to the first XI and both Nick Bellhouse who moved to London and Pete Gumbrell were missed. Alfie Weller was injured and although fit enough to play in goal for the remainder of the season where he was outstanding, his goals were a loss to the team. The most notable league victory was the 3-0 defeat of Eastbourne Galaxy, the eventual runners-up, who at the time had won every game played. There were other good victories over Crowhurst II and St. Helens and the season was completed with a resounding 10-1 triumph over the Junior Club Tackleway II with George McEwan appearing in goal in the second half of the match.

Good cup wins were achieved against Eastbourne Dynamos (5-0) and Mayfield (2-1), both from higher divisions. Jimmy McGachy was leading goal scorer in all games with 15 goals while Ashley Jansen, in his first season with the Club, contributed 11 goals in twenty matches. Jon Fitton, who played in every game and in doing so passed 200 appearances for the club, was voted 2nd XI Players‘ Player of the Year with Steve Bellhouse taking the Manager‘s Player of the Year award. Rob Potter was named Young Player of the Year. Michael Hambridge again did a tremendous job in running the side, ably assisted by Keith Swallow and Micky Zysemil.

VETERANS

The veterans, well managed by Bob Baker, reached the final of the Hastings F A Veterans Invitation Cup without conceding a goal with a win against the Junior Club Tackleway Veterans and a goalless draw with Little Common Veterans followed by a great team performance to record a 4-0 victory over Wadhurst United Veterans in the semi-final. Disappointingly the side went down to Little Common in the final played under floodlights at Sidley United’s ground.

SEASON AWARDS

CLUB WEBSITE

It was also a busy year for the club off the field. Prior to the start of the season the new club website was set up by Dave Harding which was a major step forward. The site includes a wealth of photographs covering the whole history of the club, player appearance and goal scorer records as well as many other items of interest. The feedback on the website was very positive. Messages were received from former players and relatives of ex-players who had visited the site, there was a write up in the local Rye Observer and Icklesham Parish Council even had a link to the website. Getting the website up and running was a huge undertaking and the club was indebted to Dave Harding for bringing this about and also for the ongoing management. Dave was deservedly awarded the Bert Glazier Cup.

An entertaining and exciting third Jon Fuller Memorial Match saw Icklesham Casuals come back from 5-1 down in the second half to win the game 7-6 with two goals from both Adam Fuller and Bob Baker, one from the penalty spot, along with one each from Chris Baker and Tom Fuller. The scoring was completed by a spectacular Viking own goal. Christian Kipps, amongst the goals for Viking, was named man of the match. The sum of £243 was raised for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The victory was overshadowed by the badly broken leg suffered early in the game by Steve Fuller.

PRESENTATION EVENING

Icklesham Memorial Hall – Friday, 5th June 2009

An enjoyable evening was held in June at the Memorial Hall in Icklesham when in addition to the Player of the Year awards being made, the Club was honoured to make Sussex County Football Association Long Service Awards to Bob Baker, Michael Hambridge, Keith Swallow and Martin Tytherleigh.

The presentations were preceded by the Annual General Meeting of the club.

GENERAL MATTERS

During the season Martin Tytherleigh made his 750th appearance for the club and as well as Jon Fitton, both Sean Baker and John Ensell also passed 200 games with George Richardson, Nigel Sellman and Freddie Williams reaching the 100 appearance mark. It was good to see Stuart Adams back playing for the club on a regular basis although disappointingly his season ended early through injury and both Steve Bellhouse and Jamie Walker also made welcome returns. A total of seventy players registered for the Club during the season.

On a hot afternoon in July 2008 the first Icklesham Casuals Golf Tournament was held at the Weald of Kent Course at Headcorn and proved to be a great success. Fourteen players took part in a very enjoyable competition organised by Bob Baker with Dan Marsh emerging victorious.

The inaugural Icklesham Casuals Golf Tournament winner Dan Marsh with Bob Baker

In December both Mike Beaumont and Keith Swallow took part in the Hastings 100th Anniversary Marathon and in March Keith and David Mayne, as well as other players, ran the Hastings Half Marathon.

On a sad note, on 21st August 2008 the club lost a former player in John Parsons. John played 276 games for the Icklesham Casuals between 1954 and 1966 scoring 175 goals including 47 goals in 29 appearances for the 1st team in the 1958-59 season. He played in most of the rounds of the Sussex Junior Cup in 1963-64 but missed the final after being injured on the Saturday before the game. John attended the seventieth anniversary reunion in July 2007.

In June 2009, the club was extremely pleased to hear that another former player in George Cooke, who, as chairman of Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community, had been awarded the MBE for services to sport in the Queen’s Birthday honours list. George was a goalkeeper for the club and played 174 matches between 1961 and 1970 – 84 for the 1st XI, 34 for the 2nd XI and 56 for the 3rd XI. He was born in Icklesham, attended the local primary school and also played for Icklesham Cricket Club. In 1994 George became a director of Middlesbrough Football Club and had a major role in guiding the club from its famous old ground at Ayresome Park to its new home at the Riverside Stadium and was instrumental in creating the charity Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community which helps up to 45,000 Teesiders a year.
