Season 1983-84

47TH SEASON

SEASON REPORT

The 1983-84 season was a mixed one. On the credit side, the 1st and 3rd teams were joint winners of the Hastings F A Sportsmanship Cup and the veterans were runners-up in the Hastings F A Veterans Invitation Cup. Against this, the club was seldom able to field unchanged teams and did not manage to offer much in the way of boys football.

1ST TEAM

Only on one occasion during the season did the first XI field theoretically their strongest side and on that occasion the team beat Firehills 4-0 in the Eastbourne and Hastings Premier Division Cup. The side began with a known difficulty – Steve Beale’s retirement as captain and central defender. Bob Baker took over as captain and was an enthusiastic leader, while Derek Morley became an accomplished centre-half. After a few initial errors, Peter Brown became a very useful goalkeeper, inspiring confidence in his defence as the season progressed.

Unfortunately, Mark Markowski took up cycling and Peter Redmond was unavailable, while Andrew Dunlop and Colin Shearer had serious injury trouble. In the circumstances, the side did well, with Paul Milton turning in some class displays at inside-left and earning his cup as 1st team Player of the Year. Bob Baker missed just one match all season and finished as leader scorer with 36 goals.

2ND TEAM

More than any other side in the club, the 2nd team suffered from constant changes. At full strength they were a useful side, but this was seldom.

In retrospect, it will probably be remembered as the year they went to Solihull in the A F A Junior Cup 3rd round. Their 1st round opponents withdrew, then had a story book win in London against Old Salvatorians III, when 2-0 down with ten men and only twenty minutes to go 15 year-old Wayne Bumstead scored a hat-trick.

With the aid of an offer from Persil, tickets were purchased on British Rail so the 3rd round trip to Silhill III did not bankrupt the club and provided a good day out despite the 5-0 defeat. A good friend in Tony Harris came across from Worcester to play and Stephen Hann put years on Andrew Dunlop on the journey!

The side again played sporting football with Eric Hysted, who took over as representative on the Icklesham Trust Committee, winning the Player of the Year award. Wayne Bumstead top scored with 21 goals.

3RD TEAM

By sharing the Hastings F A Sportsmanship Cup with the 1st team, the 3rd XI maintained the club’s record of trying to play football in a good spirit. Admirably captained by Nick Bellhouse they made good friends and recovered from an 18-0 defeat at Beckley with no one retiring or transferring to win two and draw three of their next five matches.

At the end of the season, Bill Bird who had played County League football before joining the club, had captained the second team successfully and finished his career in the 3rd XI, moved to Swindon. He had set an excellent example, followed by both Stephen Crisford, the 3rd team Player of the Year and David Mayne, the Bert Glazier Cup winner. They were both reliable about playing, tried hard every week, did not argue with their team-mates opponents or referees and in general maintained the attitude to the game which the club has always enjoyed.

VETERANS

The Veterans took only ten men to London and lost 4-1 to Old Camdenians Veterans in the A F A Veterans Cup. The difficulty in getting a side to travel has occurred previously and it was decided not to enter the A F A Veterans Cup in season 1984-85. In the Hastings F A Veterans Invitation Cup, the team reached the final with 2-1 wins over Civil Service Veterans and Bexhill Amateur Athletic Club Veterans before losing to Hastings Rangers Veterans at Westfield.

SEASON AWARDS

GENERAL MATTERS

A jumble sale, organised mainly by Joan Potter and Carol Fuggle, with support from other members, raised useful cash for the club, while the Christmas Raffle, largely because of good work by Andrew Dunlop was also a money spinner.

The end of season presentations at the Smugglers went very well. An accident to William Dunlop meant that other members had to take over the organisation, which they did with great success. The whole incident threw into sharp focus the necessity to make plans for the carrying on of the club should anything happen to Will and also showed that the club had an excellent reserve of organisational talent. One place where this was needed was in boys games, where there were a lot of keen youngsters in the village and district.

An enjoyable reunion was held at the Two Sawyers in Pett in May to mark twenty years since the club won the Sussex Junior Cup.
