Season 1982-83

46TH SEASON

SEASON REPORT

The forty-sixth season was in many ways a rather difficult one, though with good features. An exceptionally wet winter, with about forty inches of rain during the season, meant a record number of postponements and rearranged games. As the league divisions were small, this had compensations.

1ST TEAM

Several good judges thought the first team was the best balanced side for a number of years. Until injuries took a toll, the team were in the hunt for one of the top league places and ended the season in third position, frequently playing attractive football. The worst injury occurred in Sunday football, when popular captain Steve Beale broke a leg badly.

On the whole the side played sporting football, but a little niggling crept in a times. No one was cautioned or sent off during the season. The 1st team reached the semi-final of the Eastbourne and Hastings League Premier Division Cup, losing at Magham Down in extra time, but were knocked out early in other cup competitions. Bob Baker was again leading scorer with 17 goals with Paul Milton and Jon Fuller recording 15 and 12 goals respectively. Richard Forrest missed just one game all year – a pre-season friendly.

2ND TEAM

As results show, this was a rather drab year for the 2nd XI. Some people played very little or not at all, others lost several weeks with injury or domestic commitments and there was seldom a settled side. ‘Old hands’ in Chris Morrell, George Potter, Bill Black and Roger Taylor did much to hold the team together as did Andy Dunlop as manager and linesman, but there was a lack of young players coming through. On the credit side, the team played sportingly and gained a first ever win in the A F A Junior Cup – even if only 1-0! Russell Drew top scored with 10 goals.

3RD TEAM

On paper, the 3rd XI results were very bad, but in fact they had many quite close games, frequently giving away early goals then enjoying a good share of play later. Peter Drew and in his absence Nick Bellhouse, gave a positive and cheerful lead, followed by most players, but one or two rather tended to lose heart.

The third XI faced a problem. One of the main functions of the team was to give a game to those club members no longer brilliant but who enjoy a game of football and this the club always hoped to do. The other function was to introduce promising boys to adult football and this had not been done lately to the desired extent and the side was now rather elderly.

VETERANS

A Veterans XI (over 35) was again fielded in both the A F A Veterans and Hastings F A Veterans Invitation Cup, winning three games and losing two. The team did the club proud in reaching the last eight of the A F A Veterans Cup, losing 2-1 at home to Old Camdenians Veterans. In the earlier rounds they enjoyed excellent hospitality from Old Parmiterians Veterans and Mill Hill Village Veterans, arriving home about seven hours after final whistle in each case. George Potter led the side well and with his usual honesty said that at Mill Hill the side had four shots and scored three goals whilst the home team converted just one of around a hundred chances.

BOYS TEAM

Several boys friendlies were played at various age levels and there were a number of extremely promising local boys coming along. Geoff Adams of Winchelsea Beach took an interest in the Boys team and it was hoped this would continue.

SEASON AWARDS

GENERAL MATTERS

The club lost a good friend in Peter Kipps of the Smugglers, Pett Level. The end of season presentation awards were held there with Richard Forrest, George Potter and Nick Jones winning the Player of the Year Awards for the respective teams and Wayne Bumstead receiving the Bert Glazier Cup. The club were also looking at arranging a function in the Spring of 1984 for a reunion of the team which won the Sussex Junior Cup twenty years earlier.

The Christmas draw was a great success thanks largely to the hard work of Andrew Dunlop Junior. Jack Brown continued to look after the footballs and Robin Shearer, though handicapped by an old marker and constant rain did a good proportion of the marking out, but this did prove to be a problem.

Even without breaking his leg, Steve Beale had been going to give up the captaincy of the first team and regular football, teaching as he was at Lenham. He joined other former 1st XI captains as an architect of the club’s history who had helped his team greatly both on and off the pitch and would be much missed.

The Annual General Meeting took place at the Robin Hood Inn, Icklesham on Tuesday, 5th July 1983 at 8 pm.
