Season 2012-13

76TH SEASON

SEASON REPORT

Season 2012-13, the 76th in the history of the club, was a largely successful one.

On the field, with victory in their final match the 1st team finished as runners-up in Division Two of the East Sussex Football League therefore gaining promotion back to Division One, the 2nd team, having ended bottom of Division Five in season 2011-12, had a much better year with a mid-table league position and were divisional winners and fourth overall in the Sportsmanship Competition while the veterans reached the semi-final of the Hastings F A Veterans Invitation Cup.

There was an extremely unpleasant incident to report when joint second team manager Nigel Sellman was the victim of an unprovoked assault following the team’s match against Bo-Peep Marina on the 13th October. The police were involved in the incident in which Nigel suffered serious injuries and needed hospital treatment. The club received great support from the East Sussex League and Bo-Peep Marina withdrew their team shortly after, which saved the League from calling a Special General Meeting to recommend their expulsion.

With the weather disrupting the season it was necessary for a number of ‘double header’ matches to be played to complete the season. On Saturday, 6th April both teams had ‘double headers’ and both won their games – the 1st XI defeated Wadhurst United 2-1 and 5-1 and the 2nds beat F C Bexhill 3-1 and 2-1. This is the only time the club has won twelve points in a single day!

Off the field, the 75th anniversary celebrations concluded with a formal dinner at the Lodge at Winchelsea in September and a reunion to mark 25 years since the 1st XI were East Sussex League Division One champions without losing a game was held at the Robin Hood in April. The Icklesham Casuals Golf Tournament, this year held at Willingdon Golf Club, attracted the largest field to date.

Dave Minett was part of the relay carrying the Olympic torch around the country prior to the London games when he held the torch aloft on a section of St Leonards seafront and the first charity cheques were presented following the 75th anniversary fundraising.

The club lost a stalwart in Dick Crisford who sadly passed away in early 2013. Dick made 374 appearances for the club between 1946 and 1964 and was in goal for the Hastings League Division One Championship winning sides of 1951-52, 1957-58 and 1962-63.

After retiring from playing, Dick continued to show an interest in the club, regularly playing in and captaining the football club side in cricket matches against Pett Cricket Club and was part of the 75th anniversary photograph taken on 11th September 2011.

1ST TEAM

The first team started the season well, winning five and drawing one of their opening seven matches with the only defeat being a narrow 3-2 loss to eventual Division winners Crowborough Athletic. Only two wins came in the next seven games before five victories in the final six fixtures secured promotion.

With the withdrawal of Iden from the Premier Division, the 1st team was strengthened when Rob Levett, Shane Ridgers and Justin Wall transferred to the club at the end of November. Going into the final match of the season away to Sedlescombe Rangers the side were in fourth place with both Sedlescombe and Battle Baptist above them with the three sides separated by only two points. With a 4-1 victory over Sedlescombe coupled with a 1-1 draw for Battle Baptist the 1st team leapfrogged both sides to claim second place with only one point between the teams.

The team went out in the early rounds of all cup competitions – losing to Division One opposition in Ore Athletic and Orington (on penalties) in the Sussex Junior Cup and Wisdens Sports Challenge Cup and extremely disappointingly to Division Three side St Helens in the Hastings Junior Cup.

1st Team v George and Dragon – Saturday, 17th November 2012

The 1st team was a free scoring side but also conceded goals at the back with the home league match against Herstmonceux proving a classic example of this with the game ending in an 8-6 victory.

1st Team v Little Chelsea – Saturday, 30th March 2013

1st Team v Eastbourne Dynamos – Saturday, 20th April 2013

Dave Pugh was leading goal scorer with 19 goals while Phil Badrock (16), Rob Levett (16) and Alfie Weller (14) all reached double figures. Justin Wall was named 1st team Players’ Player of the Year and Jack Davies Manager’s Player of the Year.

1ST TEAM v SEDLESCOMBE RANGERS

Saturday, 4th May 2013 – Oaklands Park, Sedlescombe

The first team won automatic promotion back to Division One of the East Sussex League following a 4-1 victory over Sedlescombe Rangers in their final match of the season.

Going into the last round of games only two points separated Sedlescombe Rangers, Battle Baptists and Icklesham Casuals for the runners-up position with Crowborough Athletic III having completed their fixtures and secured the divisional title.

It was a deserved win thanks to a fine team performance with the side taking the lead after only five minutes when Ollie Beaumont finished after good work from Val Newman. In the final minute of normal time in the first half Sam Richardson headed in from a corner and two minutes into stoppage time Ollie Beaumont scored the best goal of the game with a fine solo effort when he rounded a Sedlescombe defender and then the goalkeeper before knocking the ball into the net.

Sedlescombe Rangers came out strongly after the interval putting Icklesham under considerable pressure with Shane Ridgers making a brilliant point blank save in goal. They pulled a goal back from a free kick in the fifty seventh minute but despite further pressure failed to create many clear chances and in the second minute of added-on time Rob Levett fired home the fourth goal.

With Battle Baptists drawing 1-1 at home to Windsor, the 1st team leapfrogged both Battle and Sedlescombe to secure the runners-up spot.

2ND TEAM

Although the 2nd team season was overshadowed by the horrific incident involving Nigel Sellman after the game with Bo-Peep Marina which had no place in football, on the field after winning just one league and cup match in 2011-12, the 2nd team had a much better year with only one victory fewer than defeats in league matches. The side gained at least one point against every other team in the division including doing the double over Victoria Baptists with an aggregate score of 11-7.

Dan Russell was leading goal scorer with 11 goals, Ollie Beaumont took the 2nd Team Players’ Player of the Year award, Ben Eighteen was the Manager’s Player of the Year and Toby Swann Young Player of the Year.

Neil Hastings deservedly won the Bert Glazier Cup and Neil and Nigel Sellman cannot be praised enough for keeping the side going after what happened at Bexhill Road in October.

Neil Hastings goes well beyond his job description as joint 2nd team manager!

VETERANS

The Veterans reached the semi-final of the Hastings F A Veterans Invitations Cup after victories over the Junior Club Tackleway Veterans and Ore Athletic Veterans and a draw against Little Common Veterans. They missed out on goal difference – by just one goal – to Little Common on finishing top of their group which meant a semi-final against Hollington United Veterans.

The team was unlucky in the semi-final where they recovered from 2-0 down to level the game at 2-2 going into final few minutes when they harshly had a penalty awarded against them when looking the more likely winners. Hollington then added a fourth goal just before the final whistle.

Stuart Adams again did an excellent job managing the side.

VETERANS v BULLSMOOR ALLSORTS

Sunday, 5th May 2013 – Icklesham Recreation Ground

The 2012-13 season was brought to a close on the morning of Sunday, 5th May with a very enjoyable friendly against Bullsmoor Allsorts, a touring team who came mainly from the Enfield and Cheshunt area.

VETERANS v BULLSMOOR ALLSORTS

Sunday, 5th May 2013
Back row (left to right):- Ian Carter, Vernon Deller, Neil Hastings, Steve Tytherleigh, Ross Shand, Robert Palmer, John Vidler, Pete Gumbrell.
Front row (left to right):- David Mayne, Bob Baker, Gavin Moor, Mike Beaumont, Shane Cuddington, Mark Stace.

The slow pace of the game suited the ages of both sides and also the very warm conditions. Icklesham dominated the opening exchanges and took the lead early on when Gavin Moor side footed in from close range. Vernon Deller doubled the lead with a confident finish after being put through. Both teams had chances in the remainder of the first half with Gavin Moor coming closest with a 20 yard drive that struck the crossbar.

The second period followed a similar pattern to the first with Icklesham the better side but with Bullsmoor Allsorts also creating chances and both John Vidler and Mark Stace had to clear off their own line. It was Mark Stace who scrambled in the third mid-way through the half and Bullsmoor Allsorts pulled a goal back with ten minutes remaining (more details later).

Mike Beaumont, Neil Hastings and Martin Tytherleigh all turned out against doctors advice! Mike was apparently our best player according to the opposition although they were soon put right on this. Martin came on for the last few minutes merely to record another club appearance (a philosophy in no way supported by either Bob Baker or David Mayne). There was still enough time for Martin to miss a couple of decent chances.

It was good to see Ian Carter back in an Icklesham shirt and Pete Gumbrell showed he had lost none of his talent despite suffering with a tight hamstring! Ross Shand came in as goalkeeper at the last minute and performed admirably apart from one minor blemish when (for the older members of the club) in a ‘Phoenix from the Flames’ moment he recreated a Ray Clemence-like blunder from the1976 England-Scotland game by allowing a speculative shot to squirm between his legs and into the net!

The Icklesham Casuals side was – Ross Shand, Ian Carter, Shane Cuddington, Mike Beaumont, John Vidler, Mark Stace, Robert Palmer, Gavin Moor, Vernon Deller, Bob Baker, Pete Gumbrell. Subs – Steve Tytherleigh, Neil Hastings, David Mayne, Martin Tytherleigh.

SEASON AWARDS

DAVE MINETT – OLYMPIC TORCH BEARER

Tuesday, 17th July 2012

The club offered congratulations to former player Dave Minett who was chosen as one of the torch bearers to carry the Olympic Flame when it travelled through the region. This was a brilliant achievement and a great honour.

Dave said that he would be given a white and gold uniform so wasn’t able to wear his green and white Icklesham Casuals shirt!

On Tuesday, 17th July 2012 Dave was part of the relay which carried the Olympic flame through Hastings and St. Leonards when it came to the town prior to the London games.

The flame was passed to Dave by Eric Hardwicke, organiser of the Hastings Half Marathon and Dave’s leg took in part of St Leonards seafront.

A tremendous and deserved honour for Dave who was selected for his dedication ‘as the most loving and supportive took grandfather a granddaughter could have’. His granddaughter Nicole has the diverse genetic condition Neurofibromatosis which affects many people in many different ways.

In order to raise awareness of the condition and funds for Nicole, Dave got on his bike and cycled 1000 miles around Germany. He did not forget Icklesham Casuals on the way being photographed in his club t-shirt!

The Children with Tumours charity was one of the good causes for which the club raised money during the 75th season.

ICKLESHAM CASUALS v ICKLESHAM CRICKET CLUB

Tuesday, 21st August 2012 – Icklesham Recreation Ground

A friendly football match against Icklesham Cricket Club took place again in August and after the closely fought game of the previous year which the football club won on penalties after a 3-3 draw, the match this season resulted in a comfortable 9-2 victory for Icklesham Casuals.

For the Casuals, Phil Badrock and Ian Oliver both scored hat-tricks with Stuart Pearson, Ben Rootes and Ollie Beaumont netting the other goals. Kevin Earl and Dean Earl replied for the cricketers.

75TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER

Friday, 21st September 2012 – The Lodge at Winchelsea

A formal dinner was held at the Lodge at Winchelsea in September as part of the celebrations to recognise the 75th anniversary of the club. It was an enjoyable occasion with a number of ex-players travelling a fair distance to be present.

Six of the Sussex Junior Cup winning side of the 1963-64 season were present at the 75th Anniversary Dinner – Chris Ades, David Ades, Jack Brown, Bill Burt, Mike Hills and George Potter with Bryan Butler joining for a drink later in the evening.

PROPOSED MATCH VERSUS HMS KENT

Sunday, 23rd September 2012 – Duke of York’s Royal Military School, Dover

On Sunday, 26th March 2006, the club was involved in probably the most prestigious match in its history when taking on a team from the frigate HMS. Kent. The match was among a number of events which marked the affiliation of the frigate to the Cinque Ports and Icklesham Casuals was chosen to represent the fourteen towns of the Cinque Ports Federation in the game. The new Cinque Ports Trophy was presented to the winning team by the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports with Icklesham going down narrowly 6-5 in the match after recovering from a 5-1 deficit at half-time.

During the 2012-13 season the club was again asked to play a game against HMS Kent with the match scheduled for Sunday, 23rd September at the Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Dover and followed by a ‘sports tea’ at the School for the two teams and supporters where the Cinque Ports Trophy would once more be awarded to the winning side.

The ship was docked in Dover with the crew providing a guard of honour at a tribute to airmen who took part in the World War II Channel Dash Operation. There was as item on the local news programme on the Friday evening about the visit of HMS Kent where the football match and Icklesham Casuals got a mention.

The match was scheduled to kick-off at 2.30 pm but a request was made on the day before the game for the kick-off to be brought forward by half an hour as the ship had received orders it would be sailing later on the Sunday rather than the previously expected Monday.

As it turned out these orders were again changed and the ship sailed at 1 am on the Sunday morning so the match had to be cancelled.

The annual match in memory of former player Jon Fuller saw Icklesham take the lead mid-way through the first half thanks to a fine individual goal from Ollie Beaumont with George Barrow adding a second later in the half. Viking had a chance to pull a goal back from the penalty spot as the interval approached but the shot struck the right-hand post. They did narrow the lead in the last minute of the half with a header from a free-kick.

Viking then scored three times in the second half to go 4-2 ahead before Ollie Beaumont with his second of the game and a shot deflected into his own net by Robert Palmer levelled the score at 4-4. Both sides had chances to win the match with Luke Crisford in the Icklesham goal making a tremendous stop in the last minute to deny Viking a winner.

Action from the Jon Fuller Memorial Match

The match was decided by a penalty shoot-out with Martin Tytherleigh, George Richardson and Adam Sully all successfully converting their spot kicks for Icklesham with both teams missing one penalty each. Luke Crisford then pulled off a fine save leaving Vernon Deller to coolly convert his penalty to win the game enabling Icklesham to lift the Jon Fuller Memorial Shield for the fifth time in seven years.

QUIZ NIGHT

Saturday, 6th April 2013 – Icklesham Memorial Hall

The quiz held in the Memorial Hall at Icklesham on Saturday, 6th April was in aid of the Football Club and raised £350 which was donated to the New Pavilion Fund.

Sixteen team entered and it proved to be one of the best finishes with three teams – Nobby’s Nuts, Fab 6 and Empty Heads – ending on the same points total meaning a tie-break to decide the winners. It was Fab 6 who won the tie-break to become the outright winners.

Thanks went to Stuart Baker for another thoroughly enjoyable evening and to everyone else who helped run the event.

25 YEAR REUNION OF UNDEFEATED 1ST TEAM

Friday, 10th May 2013 – Queen’s Head, Icklesham

The 1st team were champions of Division One of the East Sussex Football League in the 1987-88 season without losing a game and to mark this a reunion was held in the Queen’s Head on Friday, 10th May 2013.

The championship-winning squad was made up of fourteen regular players and it was great to see ten of them at the reunion with Paul Milton coming all the way from Cornwall. Of the four missing players, Stuart Adams would have been present if his beloved Brighton and Hove Albion had not been involved in a play-off game at Crystal Palace on the same night and Jon Fuller sadly passed away in 2006.

The evening proved most enjoyable with much to reminisce about.

GENERAL MATTERS

The 5th Icklesham Casuals Golf Tournament took place at Willingdon Golf Club in July with eighteen competitors and saw Lewis Tiltman comfortably take the trophy by eight stableford points with a remarkable three under par round of 66.

The Christmas Golf Event this season was held at Sedlescombe Golf Course on Sunday, 30th December and was won by the team of Ollie Beaumont, Richard Hoadley, Dan Marsh and Felix Sullivan.
