Season 1981-82

45TH SEASON

SEASON REPORT

The 1981-82 season was not a memorable one, though it had good features. In the short term, the 2nd and 3rd teams were joint runners-up in the Hastings F A Sportsmanship Cup with a mark of ninety per cent, while in the long run the decided revival of interest in boys games may prove to be important. On the debit side, bad weather and small divisions cut the amount of football played and results were largely mediocre.

1ST TEAM

The first team ended the season with six points from the last six league games including a win over Stamco for the first time ever, but were knocked out of four different cups at the first attempt. There was plenty of football ability in the side, but untidy passing, inaccurate or delayed shooting and suicidal back passes all played a part in spoiling the record.

Steve Beale kept the team going well as captain, but the first XI slipped to twelfth place in the Sportsmanship Cup, which was disappointing. Bob Baker was once more top scorer with 16 goals.

2ND TEAM

In spite of a lack of a settled team – no less than thirty five players were used between Christmas and the end of the season – the 2nd team had quite a good year, averaging a point a game in the league and as joint runners-up in for the Sportsmanship Trophy, did the club credit. Tim Jury, as captain, set a good example until injured and Chris Morrell, George Potter and Nick Jury led the side well in the latter part of the season. Jamie Adams top scored with 11 goals.

3RD TEAM

The third team fared best in cup ties, reaching the semi-final of the Eastbourne and Hastings League Division Three Cup. The side suffered a number of heavy league defeats, partly due to the fact that at least four of the other teams were wrongly placed in the bottom division of the league and partly because they never overcame the difficulty caused by the loss of goalkeeper Dave Troughton to the 2nd XI. However, Peter Drew did a good job as captain and their joint runners-up position in the Sportsmanship Cup did them great credit.

BOYS TEAM

An encouraging series of boys games at under 13, under 14 and under 16 levels revealed a lot of local promise coming along well and the club was fortunate in finding an enthusiastic team manager in Dave Cornelius.

GENERAL MATTERS

With small divisions it was possible to fit in all the fixtures on one ground, but the problem of obtaining another pitch remained.

Jimmy Fuggle (1st XI), Roger Taylor (2nd XI) and Russell Drew (Bert Glazier Cup) were all worthy winners of club trophies, while Jimmy Ballard was the first holder of a new shield for the 3rd team which was given by Bob Baker, Bill Black and Richard Forrest.

A sponsored walk for club funds raised quite a lot of money, but it was the old faithful who walked and many more members could have taken part and helped the finances.

The Annual General Meeting of the club was held at the Robin Hood Inn, Icklesham on Wednesday, 7th July 1982 at 8 pm.
