Season 2011-12

75TH SEASON

SEASON REPORT

Although results were again disappointing, season 2011-12 will long be remembered for events off the field where the year was dominated by the club’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

The start of these was marked by the taking of a photograph at Icklesham Recreation Ground on Sunday, 11th September – the exact same date as the very first match was played in 1937 and continued with a number of events throughout the year including a reunion at the Lodge at Winchelsea in June 2012 and a formal dinner also at the Lodge in the September of the 2012-13 season. The club also set a challenging target of raising £7500 during the 75th season to be divided between ten different charities all of which had a special connection to past and present members of the club.

A Facebook page for the 75th anniversary celebrations was set up to keep those interested in the club informed and updated about all the events. At the end of the season this was transferred to a general club Facebook page.

Golf competitions once more took place in the summer and at Christmas, an Xmas raffle, held, a quiz night and race night organised as well as other events which meant the season was a very busy one.

At the start of the season Steve Baker took over from Keith Swallow as club secretary and did a very efficient job.

The 75th season sadly saw the loss of a number of former players in John Archer, Ron Barden, Les Beeney, Reg Carter, Harry Fellows, Cyril Rich and George Roberts.

1ST TEAM

On the field of play after a reasonable start the 1st team again struggled and suffered seven successive defeats in all competitions in mid-season but three wins in the last five games saw a sixth place finish in Division Two. These wins included a 2-1 victory over Eastbourne Dynamos with only ten men, a 6-2 defeat of fellow strugglers Hastings Rangers where Phil Badrock found the net four times and a tremendous 3-0 success away to runners-up Langney in the last game of the season to complete a double over their opponents having won the home match 1-0 in September. Another memorable game was the home encounter with St Helens where following an abject display for seventy minutes the team found themselves trailing 4-1 against the bottom side only to suddenly find form and the back of the net four times to secure a 5-4 win.

The lack of a regular goalkeeper was a handicap to the team with six different players appearing between the posts in competitive games during the season.

The Sussex Junior Cup saw three long away trips and three high scoring games. A 6-3 win against Wheatsheaf Bognor Regis was followed by an 8-5 extra time victory at Stedham United. The side then lost narrowly 4-3 away to the Village of Ditchling. The Stedham United match created a piece of club history when Bob Baker came on as substitute to join his sons Steve and Chris in the same team.

Phil Badrock was leading scorer with 15 goals, Stuart Pearson Players’ Player of the Year and Adam Sully Manager’s Player of the Year.

Four of the points were earned in September and just one point in the remainder of the season. From October until the end of the season seventeen defeats were suffered in eighteen games.

It was a credit to the management team of Neil Hastings and Nigel Sellman that all fixtures were fulfilled and the side kept going despite the results. It didn’t help that Nigel was required by the 1st team on several occasions to play in goal. In total thirty six players were used in competitive matches.

Dan Russell finished as top goal scorer, netting on 10 occasions, George Barrow was named Players’ Player of the Year and goalkeeper Alfie Janman earned the Manager’s Player of the Year award. Toby Swann won the Young Player of the Year trophy and Ollie Beaumont the Bert Glazier Cup.

VETERANS

Only seven clubs entered the Hastings F A Veterans Invitation Cup in 2011-12 and as a result the veterans found themselves in a group of just three teams.

An opening 2-2 draw with a strong Ore Athletic Veterans side was followed by a 7-3 win against the Junior Club Tackleway Veterans but with Ore defeating Tackleway by a bigger margin the team finished second to Ore in the group on goal difference. This meant a tough semi-final with Hollington United Veterans where they suffered a 3-0 loss.

In the Queen’s Head after the match with Tackleway Veterans on Wednesday, 7th September, Pete Gumbrell was presented with a shield to mark 200 club appearances.

SEASON AWARDS

ICKLESHAM FETE

Saturday, 6th August 2011 – Icklesham Recreation Ground

The Casuals had a football tombola stall and three other fundraisers at the Icklesham Fete –

  • Welly Throwing Competition
  • Football ‘Shoot The Target’ Game
  • Keepy-Uppy Competition

Between them all a fantastic sum of £142.83 was raised which went towards the upkeep of the Memorial Hall and pavilion with thanks going to all those who helped run the activities or who came along to support.

ICKLESHAM CASUALS v ICKLESHAM CRICKET CLUB

Wednesday, 10th August 2011 – Icklesham Recreation Ground

A competitive and enjoyable friendly challenge match was played between Icklesham Casuals and Icklesham Cricket Club at the Recreation Ground on Wednesday 10th August.

Val Newman put the football club ahead with a header from a corner and Ben Rootes doubled the lead, firing home after Chris Baker’s shot had been well saved. The cricket club pulled a goal back shortly before half-time through Andy Crouch and levelled the score early in the second half when Sean Baker converted from the penalty spot. Scott Butterfield restored the Casuals lead only for Simon Drew to bring the cricketers level once again.

With the score tied at 3-3, the game was decided by a penalty shoot-out with the footballers edging the game 4-3 on penalties when Alfie Weller converted the decisive spot-kick.

JON FULLER MEMORIAL MATCH

Sunday, 11th September 2011 – Icklesham Recreation Ground

It was fitting that the date of the 2011 match, in the club’s 75th season, coincided that of the very first game against Rye Old Grammarians – 11th September 1937.

The first half was fairly even with chances at both ends and with the interval approaching Viking took the lead when Mark Stace‘s corner found the net. The Casuals came back strongly in the second period and it was Sean Baker, having been moved up front, who equalised. Phil Badrock put Icklesham 2-1 ahead before Steve Baker made it 3-1, scoring directly from a free kick. In the closing minutes Sean Baker hammered in an unstoppable fourth goal to make the final score 4-1.

Steve Baker picked up the man of the match shield while Bob Baker, currently on 580 goals for the club, decided to pass on the opportunity of getting closer to the 600 goal mark by missing a hatful of chances!

The Icklesham Casuals team was – Leo Cresswell, Jon Fitton, David Mayne, Sean Baker, Joe Simmonds, Michael Beaumont, Vernon Deller, Tom Fuller, Phil Badrock, Steve Baker, Bob Baker. Subs – Tony Fuller, Steve Tytherleigh, Martin Tytherleigh, Neil Hastings and Conrad Giles.

The weather could have been better with torrential rain at times during the game but this didn’t dampen the support and it was good to see so many old faces. The day gives the opportunity to reminisce and to remember Jon and the fact that the numbers each year are growing says everything about the respect everyone had for Jon as a person and also the contribution he made to both Clubs.

EAST HILL STEPS RACE

Congratulations went to Martin Tytherleigh, Val Newman and Michael Beaumont who entered the 1066 East Hill Steps Race and won the prize for the 1st Sporting Team.

As usual better at running than footie…..

The trio finished 5th, 7th and 29th out of 73 runners, you can guess the order!

The race was a 1.066 mile step race challenge event starting and finishing at Winkle Island in Hastings Old Town

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE

Saturday, 17th December 2011 – Queen’s Head, Icklesham

The Christmas Raffle was held at the Queen’s Head on Saturday, 17th December and raised the sum of £375 towards the 75th Anniversary charity fund raising target of £7500. This was a tremendous amount to raise and sincere thanks went to everyone who sold and bought tickets and who came along on the day for the raffle draw. The total raised for charity after the raffle stood at £1537.36.

The winners of the main prizes in the draw were –

  • 1st Prize – Family Christmas Hamper – Peter Drew

Peter Drew – winner of the 1st prize of a hamper in the Christmas Raffle

It was really good to see Warwick Breeds at the draw. Warwick played 243 games for the club between 1958 and 1972 before moving to Canada. For a number of those who were also at the draw and who played in the same era as Warwick it was the first time they had seen him for over 30 years.

Sunday, 25th March 2012

Congratulation went to Mike Beaumont, Gavin Moor, Paul Sully, Keith Swallow, Martin Tytherleigh and John Vidler for their success in winning the trophy for the first Non-Athletic Sports Team in the Hastings Half Marathon. Friday, 11th May 2012 – Icklesham Memorial Hall

The Race Night held on Friday, 11th May in the Memorial Hall at Icklesham proved to be a galloping success raising the sum of £296.55 for the chosen charities which the club is aiming to help during the 75th anniversary season.

Steve Beale as usual did an excellent job hosting the evening and thanks went to him, everyone who came along to support the event and Sue Beale for her help in running the tote. The total amount raised for the good causes stood at £3110.93.

Presentation of the awards for the season were made at the Race Night which included appearance awards to George Richardson for 100 games and Neil Hastings for 200 matches.

75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

The 2011-12 season, the 75th of the club, was a special one and was celebrated with a number of events. Icklesham Casuals received a great deal of publicity during the year and a large sum of money was raised for a number of different charities.

All the hard work put in to mark the achievement was undoubtedly worthwhile with the 75th anniversary celebrations proving an outstanding success.

The events began on 11th September 2011 when a special photograph was taken involving past and present members and continued throughout the season with club chairman Bob Baker being interviewed on a local radio station, photographs and club memorabilia were displayed at Turtle Fine Arts in Rye – formerly Thompson’s Tea Rooms where the club was founded in 1937, Mike Beaumont, Val Newman and Martin Tytherleigh completed a charity triathlon and 75 holes of golf were played in a day.

The main celebration took place on Saturday, 16th June 2012 with afternoon football matches at Icklesham Recreation Ground followed by an evening buffet at the Lodge at Winchelsea.

The handbook was free but anyone wishing to give a small donation could do so with all donations going towards the 75th anniversary charity fund raising.

Two golf events, expertly organised by Bob Baker, were held during the season – the 4th Icklesham Casuals Golf Tournament took place at Tenterden Golf Club on Thursday, 28th July 2011 and was won by Ollie Beaumont and a Christmas Golf Event at Hawkhurst Golf Club on Wednesday, 28th December 2011 where the team of Steve Beale, Peter Drew and Tony Forster triumphed.
