Season 2006-07

70TH SEASON

SEASON REPORT

The 2006-07 season was a difficult one due to the appalling weather conditions. At one time it had been feared that the season would have to be abandoned as in 2000-01 but thanks to much hard work from the officers of the East Sussex League, the league programme was completed. It was necessary to cancel the league cup competitions but the Hastings F A competitions were concluded. As a result of the adverse weather there was a backlog of fixtures and the season was extended into the second week in May with the inevitable clash with cricket which also caused problems in fielding teams. There were a host of midweek games which at one point saw the second team playing four times in eight days.

This was also the club’s seventieth season and this achievement was celebrated on Saturday, 21st July 2007 with an afternoon football match at the Recreation Ground followed by a reunion in the Memorial Hall which was attended by around 150 past and present players, partners and guests.

1ST TEAM

The first team ultimately had a successful season finishing in fourth place in Division One. The team started the season slowly with only one win in the opening eight league fixtures before going on a tremendous run in the remaining twelve games which saw nine wins, two draws and just one defeat.

The only loss came in the final match of the season away to champions Punnetts Town. Going into this game, the top three positions in the Division were still to be decided with both Punnetts Town and Hooe Sports in with a chance of winning the league and the Junior Club Tackleway also in the mix for promotion. Punnetts Town had to win the game to both secure promotion and take the title. The match at Punnetts Town Recreation Ground took place in front of a large crowd which included players and officials from both Hooe and Tackleway.

The first team recovered from 1-0 down to lead 2-1 fairly late in the game before a number of refereeing decisions which baffled the majority of those watching allowed Punnetts Town to come back to win 3-2. This included the equalising goal which was scored from a corner given after a shot from distance by Punnetts Town flew high over the crossbar with no one appealing for a corner and both teams lining up for the goal kick!

In an end of season game which was of no significance to the first team in terms of league position, the club can be proud that in a match of such importance to other clubs, the strongest possible side was fielded and they did everything to try to win. This was acknowledged after the game by both representatives of Hooe Sports and the Junior Club Tackleway.

1st Team v Punnetts Town – Saturday, 12th May 2007

In cup competitions the 1st XI won through a round in both the A F A Intermediate Cup and the Sussex Junior Cup and had qualified for the quarter finals of the Super Stitch ’86 Challenge Cup when the competition was abandoned with victories over Herstmonceux and Firehills Seniors.

Phil Badrock was again top scorer, finding the net on 25 occasions with Sean Baker (15) and George Richardson (13) also reaching double figures. With 18 league goals Phil finished in second place in the East Sussex League Division One scoring charts. Both Greg Palmer and Martin Tytherleigh appeared in all thirty first team matches. Sean Baker was voted 1st XI Players’ Player of the Year with Nigel Sellman picking up the Manager’s award and Greg Palmer taking the Young Player of the Year trophy.

2ND TEAM

The second team were rarely able to field a settled side and relied on strength in depth, fielding no less than forty eight players over the season, to achieve a mid-table position in Division Five where an impressive finish saw just one defeat in the last seven league games including a 5-2 victory over divisional champions, Cinque Ports. The quarter final of the Hastings F A Lower Divisions Cup was reached with wins over Peasmarsh and Iden III and Travaux before going down to a strong Benbow side.

VETERANS

The veterans failed to make it past the group stage in the Hastings F A Veterans Invitation Cup but were so close to qualifying. Having won the first two games against Peche Hill Select Veterans and the Junior Club Tackleway Veterans the side needed a draw against Westfield Veterans in the final group game to progress. Finding themselves 4-1 down with little time left, the veterans staged a remarkable recovery to draw level at 4-4, including a goal from around forty yards from Joe Beardsley, only for Westfield to win the game in the final minute from a hotly disputed free-kick.

The first Jon Fuller Memorial Match was held at Icklesham Recreation Ground in the September following Jon’s death from Motor Neurone Disease in March and the attendance of players, friends and family showed the regard in which Jon was held. The day gave everyone the opportunity to remember Jon and to meet up again with old faces that they hadn’t seen for a number of years.

The crowd watching the game

The game itself was won by Viking by the impressive margin of 7-1 but this doesn’t fully reflect the match with chances being fairly even – the difference being that Viking took their chances and Icklesham Casuals didn’t. This can be seen by the fact that Mark Walker, the Viking goalkeeper was named as man of the match. Lewis Parsons netted the consolation Icklesham goal.

Viking became the inaugural winners of the Jon Fuller Memorial Shield and this was presented to Viking captain, Stuart Adams by Martin Tytherleigh.

GEORGE POTTER’S SPONSORED WALK AROUND THE CINQUE PORTS TOWNS

Monday, 25th to Friday, 29th June 2007

In June, George Potter completed an eighty mile sponsored walk around the towns of the Cinque Ports to raise money for a number of his favourite charities – the British Heart Foundation, Save the Children, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and St Michaels Hospice. The walk was organised to coincide with the club’s seventieth season and was a tribute to his close friend, Derek Norcross, who put in many years of sterling work with a variety of charities and who sadly died in 2006.

George began the walk from Hastings Town Hall on Monday, 25th June and was seen off by Hastings and Rye MP Michael Foster, Hastings Mayor Maureen Charlesworth, BBC presenter Kaddy Lee-Preston, representatives from the British Heart Foundation and St Michaels Hospice as well as many friends and supporters. After passing through Icklesham (stopping off at the Robin Hood!), George took in the towns of Winchelsea, Rye, Lydd, New Romney, Hythe, Folkestone, Dover, Deal and Ramsgate before finishing the walk in Margate on Friday 29th June. A raffle was held at the seventieth anniversary reunion to add further funds to those already raised.

After collecting in all the money, a presentation was made to the charities in October 2007 at Hastings Lifeboat Station when a cheque for the magnificent sum of £6,420.71 was handed over. George was given a framed certificate by save the Children in recognition of his achievement.

70TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Saturday, 21st July 2007 – Icklesham Recreation Ground

A celebration to mark the seventieth anniversary of the club was held at Icklesham Recreation Ground on Saturday, 21st July 2007 which was attended by about a hundred and fifty present and past members of the club, partners and guests.

In the afternoon an inter-club football match was played in which the ‘red’ team defeated the ‘green and white’ team by seven goals to two. This was followed by a buffet in the Memorial Hall with speeches from George Potter, Andrew Dunlop, Mike Hills and John Cornford on behalf of the Sussex County Football Association.

The awards for the 2006-07 season were also made during the evening.

GENERAL MATTERS

In a difficult season, a club always relies on its loyal members to help it through and 2006-07 was no exception with much of the hard work being done by a small number of individuals. Keith Swallow, as secretary and team managers, Martin Tytherleigh and Michael Hambridge were all deserving of the Club’s thanks as well as Micky Zysemil, whose help both on and off the pitch on match days earned him the Bert Glazier Cup.

Off the field the club were extremely grateful to Stuart and Mags Baker who organised an enjoyable quiz in the Memorial Hall which raised the magnificent sum of £606 for the pavilion fund.

Towards the end of season the goal at the far end of the Recreation Ground was vandalised with both posts being broken off. The matter was reported to the police. The club still had a set of posts at Guestling Playing Fields and arrangements would be made to bring these to Icklesham to replace the broken goal.

The Annual General Meeting was held at the Queen’s Head in Icklesham on Tuesday, 17th July 2007.
