HASTINGS F A VETERANS INVITATION CUP WINNERS 2007-08

The Veterans lifted the Hastings F A Veterans Invitation Cup for the second time with a 4-2 victory over Little Common Veterans in the final played under lights in front of a sizeable crowd at Gullivers Sports Ground in Sidley.

It was Little Common Veterans who were also defeated when the Veterans first took the trophy in the 2002-03 season.

The road to the final…..

GROUP MATCHES

The group stage began in mid-August with a 3-1 away win against Battle Baptist Veterans with two goals from Bob Baker, one from the penalty spot and a George McEwan strike.

Then followed a victory by a record score for the Veterans when they defeated the Junior Club Tackleway Veterans 16-1 at Icklesham Recreation Ground when both Martin Tytherleigh and Steve Fuller helped themselves to five goals apiece. Tony Forster, Steve Tytherleigh, Mike Beaumont, George McEwan, Vernon Deller and an own goal were the other scorers.

With victories in the opening two games, a draw in the final group match away to Westfield Veterans, who had also won both their opening two games would be enough to see the side through to the final. The score stood at 1-1 at half-time with Steve Tytherleigh getting the goal. Westfield then took the lead after the interval before a late equaliser from Vernon Deller gave the Veterans the point they required.

With Westfield Veterans having defeated the Junior Club Tackleway Veterans and Battle Baptist Veterans 9-0 and 7-2 respectively, it was ultimately the 16-1 win over Tackleway that proved decisive and allowed the team to progress on goal difference.

Player Pass

In the final at Gulliver’s, the home of County League Sidley United, it was Little Common Veterans who took the lead in the 13th minute following a counter-attack, but George McEwan brought Icklesham level on the half-hour mark with a left wing corner which squeezed in at the far post. A few minutes later, George McEwan delivered an excellent pass for Martin Tytherleigh to draw the goalkeeper and fire home from a tight angle to make the score 2-1 at the interval.

The decisive moment came midway through the second period when Martin Tytherleigh’s shot was spilled by the Little Common ‘keeper and Mike Beaumont bundled the rebound home to make it 3-1. Victory was effectively sealed when George McEwan capped a fine individual and team display by firing home a left foot shot from the edge of the penalty area ten minutes from time. Little Common pulled one back with six minutes to go, but nothing was going to stop the Casuals from lifting the trophy.

The trophy was presented to captain Stuart Adams by Peter Huggins, chairman of the Hastings and District Football Association.
