Season 1989-90

53RD SEASON

SEASON REPORT

Season fifty three was once more a mixed one with the first team showing an improvement on the previous year, but the second team again struggling. Few matches were lost to the weather, only three being postponed which meant neither side were required to play any evening games. The club’s reputation for sportsmanship was maintained with no player being cautioned or sent-off.

1ST TEAM

The first team was strengthened by the return of both Andy Harman and Tony Forster, although they lost the services of Stuart Adams, who decided to take a year off from Saturday football and Jon Fuller, who missed the whole season through injury. An all round improvement was seen with more goals being scored and fewer conceded. Although the side finished only one place higher than in 1988-89, with almost twice as many points gained they finished well ahead of the bottom two. League victories included a 13-0 win against Hooe Sports with Bob Baker scoring five goals. The team reached the semi-final of the East Sussex Challenge Cup defeating three other Premier Division sides in Harrow, Dental Practice Board and Hawkhurst United on the way before being drawn against league runners-up Firehills in the last four, going down 4-1 at the Firs.

Much of the improvement was down to Bob Baker who became player-manager at the start of the season and also finished as leading scorer for the fifteenth successive year with 18 goals. Steve Fuller and Andy Vickers transferred from Ninfield United mid-way through the season and greatly strengthened the side. Mark Stace was voted first team Player of the Year, narrowly ahead of Gavin Stace and Derek French.

2ND TEAM

The 2nd XI had a disappointing year, again due to a large extent to the lack of a regular goalscorer and too many goals being given away. Despite finishing only one place clear of relegation, the team were comfortably ahead of the two sides below them. Several matches were lost narrowly at the start of the season before suffering some heavy defeats. The corner appeared to have been turned with a run of just one defeat in seven games towards the end of the season before losing the final three matches, although one of these was an 8-1 defeat against champions Linton II, who were involved in a cup final a few days later and so sportingly decided to play the whole of their first team from the Premier Division.

Terry Blackford did a very good job in managing the side as well as refereeing some games when no referee was appointed by the league. The club were also grateful to both John Oak and Rod Beckingham who also help out with refereeing. In fact an official referee was only appointed for three out of twelve home league matches. It was again difficult to find a regular place for everybody due to the number of players available but this was not the case at the end of October when, very disappointingly, it was not possible to raise a team to go to London to play Old Monovians III in the A F A Junior Cup.

VETERANS

The veterans were unluckily drawn away to Rye United Veterans in the first round of the Hastings F A Veterans Invitation Cup and went down by the odd goal in five in a very close game having fielded what was probably one of the strongest veterans sides for several years.

A friendly was also arranged against The Junior Club Tackleway Veterans which was won 3-1.

SEASON AWARDS

ICKLESHAM CASUALS SIX-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT

Icklesham Recreation Ground – Saturday, 15th July 1989

The club organised a six-a-side tournament at the Icklesham Summer Fete which was dedicated to the memory of William Dunlop. This proved to be a great success with praise being received from many quarters.

Twelve teams took part in the competition, including two from Icklesham Casuals, and were divided into two groups with the two top teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals. The winners were Viking who defeated Westfield Plough 4-1 after extra time in the final and were awarded the William Dunlop Memorial Shield.

By attracting more people to the fete, it helped to raise almost £2000 which was the highest ever total and about £600 up on the previous year.

SEDLESCOMBE SIX-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT

Oaklands Park, Sedlescombe – Saturday, 29th July 1989

A squad comprising of Jon Fuller, Mark Stace, David Mayne, Andy Harman, Derek French and Hugh Sullivan won the Sedlescombe Football Club Six-a-Side Tournament. Victories over Westfield (3-1) and Netherfield (1-0) plus a goalless draw with Sedlescombe ‘A’ saw the side qualify for the semi-finals where a Gavin Stace goal gave them a 1-0 win over Sedlescombe ‘B’. The final was a repeat of the group match with Netherfield with Mark Stace scoring the only goal of the game.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE

Robin Hood, Icklesham – Thursday, 21st December 1989

The Christmas Raffle was held in the Robin Hood on the Thursday before Christmas and raised around £160. The first prize was a case of choice wines.

PRESENTATION EVENING

Fairlight Lodge Hotel – Friday, 18th May 1990

The end of season presentation evening was held at the Fairlight Lodge Hotel and proved to be more enjoyable than in the previous season. Mark Stace was presented with his 1st XI Player of the Year Trophy with Stephen Crisford getting the 2nd team award. Christian Kipps won the Bert Glazier Cup which was fitting with the cup having been donated by his late father Peter.

GENERAL MATTERS

A monthly draw was started in order to raise additional funds and while the initial response to this was disappointing’ it was hoped that membership would build in time.

The 1990 Annual General Meeting was held at the Robin Hood, Icklesham on Wednesday, 18th July at 8.15 pm.
