SEASON REPORT
The 2013-14 season, the 77th for the Club, was one of the most disappointing in the Club’s history from a playing point of view. The 1st team finished in last place in Division One of the East Sussex League and the Club was forced to take the unwanted decision to withdraw the 2nd team from Division Five.
It was more encouraging off the field with a 50-year reunion held to mark the 1st team winning the Sussex Junior Cup, fund raising for the new pavilion and three golf events organised.
1ST TEAM
After gaining promotion to Division One the previous season, the 1st team were weakened by the loss back to Iden of Shane Ridgers, Rob Levett and Justin Wall when Iden re-entered a side in the Premier Division.
The team won three of their opening league matches although one of these was against Eastbourne Albert who subsequently withdrew, and enjoyed a 14-0 victory at home to Thakeham Village in the Sussex Junior Cup with Phil Badrock scoring six goals. Defeat was suffered in the next six league fixtures leaving the side at the foot of the table but a strong finish with three victories in the final four games gave them a chance of avoiding relegation with Sandhurst needing to take four points from their ‘double header’ fixture against Hollington United II on the final Saturday of the season.
It was disappointing when Hollington United were unable to field a team therefore gifting Sandhurst six points and consigning the 1st team to last place on goal difference behind Langney Wanderers II. With Eastbourne Albert having withdrawn, only the bottom team would be relegated but the East Sussex League, appreciating the unfairness of how the final league placing were decided offered the Club the opportunity to remain in Division One which was accepted.
Mike Beaumont and Martin Tytherleigh as joint player-managers did well in holding the side together in a difficult year. Sam Ricketts was the Players’ Player of the Year with Adam Gooch taking the Manager’s Player award. Phil Badrock, with 29 goals was leading goal scorer.

2ND TEAM
Following the horrific incident involving Bo-Peep Marina in the previous season it was totally understandable that Nigel Sellman and Neil Hastings did not wish to continue to manage the second team.
At the Annual General Meeting of the Club held in June, Nick Bellhouse had offered to manage the side with Jamie Walker assisting him but as the season approached this arrangement did not work out and although Jamie Walker did his best to keep the side going, in mid-September, after two friendly matches and three league games – all of which were lost – the lack of players and commitment from others resulted in the second team being withdrawn from Division Five of the East Sussex League.
This was extremely disappointing and also embarrassing for the Club but there was a determination to resolve all the issues and during the season much hard work was put in so the Club was in a position to apply to enter the reserve side again in the 2014-15. This included liaising with Paul Barnett and Adam Murphy from Pett Cricket Club who were interested in getting involved.

VETERANS
The Veterans drew both matches in the group stage of the Hastings F A Veterans Cup but, in a three-team group, this was enough to qualify for the semi-finals as runners-up.
In the semi-final the team were comprehensively beaten by competition winners Hollington United.

SEASON AWARDS
CHARITY CHEQUE PRESENTATION
Icklesham Recreation Ground – Wednesday, 31st July 2013
After pre-season training at the Recreation Ground at the end of July a cheque for £750 was presented by Club chairman Bob Baker to Alyson Jones from Parkinson’s Uk. This was from the charity fundraising during the Club’s 75th Anniversary season.
ICKLESHAM FETE
Icklesham Recreation Ground – Saturday, 3rd August 2013
The Club ran both the ‘football’ tombola and a cake stall at the Icklesham Fete in August to help raise funds for the Icklesham Trust Committee.
The afternoon also provided an opportunity to present Jon Fitton and Sean Baker with their East Sussex League Division Two runners-up medals from the 2012-13 season.
JON FULLER MEMORIAL MATCH
Icklesham Recreation Ground – Sunday, 6th October 2013
The Jon Fuller Memorial Match played in early October proved to be the final game after eight years with much needed funds having been raised for the Motor Neurone Disease Association over that period.
The last match was rather a one-sided affair with a strong Viking team beating the Casuals by four goals to one with Phil Badrock nettiing the Icklesham goal in the first half.

PIER TO PIER WALK
Eastbourne Pier to Hastings Pier – Sunday, 27th October 2013
At the end of October, Bob Baker, Stuart Baker, Derek French and David Mayne were among eleven people who took part in a sponsored walk from Eastbourne Pier to Hastings Pier to raise funds for the new pavilion with Mike Beaumont and Tony Forster joining them for part of the walk.
With torrential early morning rain and forecasts later in the day of the worst hurricane since the Great Storm of 1987, the sense in actually going ahead with the walk was questioned but despite a strong wind and short shower, the sun was out for most of the day.
After a brief ‘photo shoot’, the walkers set-off from Eastbourne Pier just past 9 am passing through Sovereign Harbour, Norman’s Bay, along Bexhill seafront and a short stop for lunch at the Sovereign Light Cafe, over Galley Hill and on to Hastings Pier, arriving shortly after 3 pm.
A challenging but very enjoyable and satisfying day and the sum of £1208 raised for the New Pavilion Fund.
SUSSEX JUNIOR CUP WINNERS – 50 YEAR REUNION
The Robin Hood, Icklesham – Friday, 25th April 2014
A reunion was held at the Robin Hood in Icklesham in April 2014 to mark fifty years since the 1st team won the Sussex Junior Cup in the 1963-64 season, the greatest achievement in the history of the Club to date.
The event was attended by seven members of the winning team as well as Norman Hickman who played in several of the rounds leading up to the final, Eddie Potter, deputy chairman of the Sussex County Football Association, current officers of the Club and guests.
The Sussex Junior Cup 50-Year Reunion proved to be an extremely enjoyable evening.
PRESENTATION EVENING
Cinque Ports Arms, Hastings – Friday, 9th May 2014
The Club presentation evening was held at the Cinque Ports Arms in All Saints Street, Hastings when the awards for the season were handed out.
GENERAL MATTERS
Strong winds and heavy rain over the Christmas period caused considerable damage to the pavilion at the Recreation Ground.
It was a busy year on the golf front. The 6th Icklesham Casuals Golf Tournament took place at Wellshurst Golf Club in Hellingly on the 25th July with George Potter taking the trophy, a Christmas Golf Event was held at Tenterden Golf Club and there was another charity golf challenge – to play 36 holes in nine different counties in one day. This raised £1,360 which was divided between Macmillan Cancer Support and the New Icklesham Pavilion Fund.
