Season 1964-65

This season was typical of several in the Club’s history when an outstanding season, as in 1963-64, was followed by an enjoyable but less successful one. The 1st XI had a poor season in the Hastings League, but still reached the final of two cups, the Reserves, relegated to Division Three of the Hastings League, had a good year on the whole, while the 3rd team had few big defeats and played much useful football. Best of all, the reputation of being a sporting Club was retained and though not winning the new Sportsmanship Cup, Udimore being the first holders, it was a trophy within reach of any of the three teams. William Dunlop was also elected as Chairman of the Sussex County Football Association.

The first team combined the poorest league record for several years with a good return in cup ties, against much the same teams. There were a number of reasons for the disappointing performances. First and foremost, David Ades moved to Sandhurst to work and took up refereeing and Bill Burt moved to a new job at Willesborough halfway through the season which meant the loss of another experienced forward. The defence, which two years previously let in only sixty four goals in thirty one games, was pierced one hundred and thirty four times in forty matches. It improved as the season wore on but some of the heroes of the Sussex Junior Cup were older and slower. This slowness applied also to the forward line and reflected a lack of fitness and it appeared that serious consideration would need to be given to trying to get players to take up evening ‘keep-fit’ classes if the team was to hold its own in intermediate football.

The best performances were the 2-0 win away at Rushlake Green in the third round of the Hastings Intermediate Cup and the 4-1 victory over Westfield in the semi-final. In the four league games against the same two clubs, the side conceded twenty nine goals! In the A F A Junior Cup, two home victories were achieved against Reigate Priory II and Old Hendonians II before losing 3-2, also at home, to Corinthian Casuals ‘A’, the holders. The side lost the two cup finals, going down narrowly 2-1 to Hastings League Champions, Eastbourne Working Men’s Club in the Hastings League Intermediate Cup at the Pilot Field before losing 5-2 to Bodiam two days later in the Robertsbridge Charity Intermediate Cup having fought back to 3-2 after being 3-0 down, missing a penalty and then conceding two goals in the last five minutes.

Icklesham Recreation Ground – Saturday, 21st November 1964

In the third round of the A F A Junior Cup, the 1st team were drawn at home to the holders Corinthian Casuals ‘A’, probably the most well known and genuine amateur club in the world.

It was anticipated that in the Corinthians Casuals side would be the former Essex cricket captain Doug Insole, who played at Wembley for Corinthian Casuals in their drawn Amateur Cup final against Bishop Auckland a few years previously. As it turned out, Doug Insole did not play in the game.

Icklesham found themselves 3-0 down at the interval but put up a good fight in the second half pulling back two goals for a final score of 3-2 to Corinthian Casuals.

Brian Barden with 31 goals and Chris Ades with 26 were leading scorers. George Potter was twice a reserve-to-travel for the Sussex Intermediate team. He led the 1st XI well and set a good example of one hundred per cent effort and clean play.

George Cooke had an unlucky month in November. The 15-year-old goalkeeper damaged his hand in the 6-1 defeat at Appledore while trying to stop the first goal – a strong shot from 30 yards by the opposing centre-forward – and spent the rest of the game on the left-wing. Then at the end of the month he badly cut his head after only five minutes of the loss at home to Rushlake Green. Before his move, Bill Burt was unavailable for three weeks early in the season while apple picking and Bryan Butler missed games in January after having his tonsils removed.

One minor blot on the season was relative unfitness due to Friday night parties and Saturday lunch-time meetings in pubs and clubs. Although this concerned only a few players on a small number of Saturdays, it was less than fair to the other members of the side. All concerned realised this and there was reason to hope that it would be less of a worry for the next season.

Limited cup success meant that the second team played fewer matches than usual. Relegated to Division Three of the Hastings League, the side was much more successful and played good football most weeks with one of the strongest defences in the Division.

The team owed much to John Dunk’s vigorous personality as captain, while Andy Dunlop as team manager continued to look after the side. For the first time, the second team entered the A F A Minor Cup and although losing 4-0 to Old Esthamians III, they were far from disgraced. Goals were well shared out with Fred Dallaway (13) and Jack Brown (12) leading the way.

The record was creditable, but the claims of the 1st team meant that a settled side was impossible and but for this the Reserves might have been near to promotion. With four strong sides being moved up to Division Two, it was hoped the side would have a good chance in 1965-66, given good luck, a settled side and a real determination to get fit.

A very young third team, fulfilling its role as a nursery for the future, played much good football. From January 23rd until the end of the season the side averaged over three goals a game and in only a few of the defeats were they completely outclassed. Once more much was owed to Bert Glazier, as team manager, for keeping the team cheerful as well as acting as referee or linesman almost every week and playing the odd game or two. Don Butcher or in his absence, Mick Cooke, led the side well. Quite a number of players, unknown at the start of the season, developed very well.

As with the second team, the side played their first A F A game with a 7-1 defeat to Old Lyonian V at Greenford in the Novets Cup. Phil Harrod with 28 goals was easily the leading marksman. One of the unusual feats was in the 7-4 victory at Robertsbridge in February, where in a father and son scoring burst, Bert Glazier hit three goals and Robert Glazier added one from the penalty spot.

The final third team match of the season against Etchingham United II was due to be played on a Tuesday evening, but William Dunlop received a telephone call from Etchingham explaining that six of their side had tickets to see the pop group the Yardbirds at the Assembley Rooms, Tunbridge Wells on the same night and could the match be re-arranged. The Club was pleased to oblige but this then meant the game being played on the Saturday which was also F A Cup Final day. The Yardbirds’ records ‘For Your Love’ had been top of the charts four weeks previously.

Tea was provided after matches, first by Heather Williams and then by Jean Parsons. John Parsons did a great deal in connection with a dance at Icklesham and Phil Harrod was responsible for much of the marking out at Guestling. In November, the Sussex County Junior Inter-League first round match between the Hastings League and the Eastbourne League was played at Icklesham Recreation Ground. John Parsons was in the Hastings League team.

The Annual General Meeting was held at the Robin Hood Inn, Icklesham on Wednesday, 28th July 1965.
