The 1st team defeated Robertsbridge United Reserves at home last Saturday in the first round of the East Sussex Football League Challenge Cup (Divisions Three and Four).

They took the lead after only 3 minutes when Tom Cumber’s excellent strike found the roof of the net and netted twice more in two minutes to go 3-0 up. Firstly, Keiron Buss finished a good move involving him and Tom on 12 minutes and the roles were reversed in the 14th minute when Keiron’s shot came back off the post and Tom netted the rebound.

Robertsbridge pulled a goal back shortly before the interval following a scramble in the goalmouth but Keiron made the game safe with his second goal after 65 minutes.

In the next round the 1st team will be away to either Wittersham or The Junior Club Tackleway III.

The 2nd team put in a much improved performance on the previous few weeks. Although they went down 4-0 away to Bexhill Amateur Athletic Club III, they were only 1-0 down at half-time and Bexhill AAC are the current league leaders.

On Sunday morning the Veterans picked up their first league points of the season with a 3-0 victory over a good Battle Town Veterans side at the Recreation Ground. It was a closely fought game with all the goals coming late on.

The Casuals took the lead when Tim Johnson reacted quickest from a corner to fire the ball home and quickly went 2-0 up through debutant, Simon Randall, who was set through on goal from a long ball by keeper Chasse Selfe to delicately lob the Battle Town goalkeeper. The final goal came in the last couple of minutes when Jon Fitton whipped in a dangerous cross to the near post for Tim to finish for his second goal of the game.

It is with great sadness that the Club received the news of the passing of former player Chris Ades on Tuesday, 21st October.

Chris was undoubtedly one of the best players ever to play for Icklesham Casuals, making a memorable debut at the start of the 1960-61 season in a friendly away to Westfield which the Casuals won 14-1 with Chris netting six goals.

A member of the 1st team that was Hastings League Division One champions in 1960-61, Chris was part of the greatest achievement in the Club’s history to date, playing in the 2-0 win over Longley’s of Crawley at the Saffrons in Eastbourne when the first team won the Sussex Junior Cup in the 1963-64 season. Chris scored 11 goals in the rounds leading up to the final but he and brother David missed the fifth round tie at home to Burwash on Saturday, 1st February 1964 as it was Chris’ wedding day when he married Marie, his wife for fifty two years. Will Dunlop, Club secretary at the time, was not too happy about players getting married during the football season and even asked Chris if the wedding could take place in the morning so both could make the game in the afternoon!

Chris was leading goal scorer for the 1st team in 1960-61 with 46 goals, 1961-62 with 36 goals and 1963-64 with 40 goals.

David French, the 1st team captain in the early 1960s, would go to see Will Dunlop on a Friday evening for a ‘team talk’ regarding the following days fixture. William always knew the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition as well as how strict the referee was and therefore which Icklesham players would need to watch their behaviour – quite often this would be Chris and brother David according to Will!

The 1969-70 season was the last when Chris played regularly for Icklesham after being injured in a game at Brede, but he still turned out for the Club on the odd occasion in the years that followed including for the veterans, pulling on the famous green and white quartered shirt for the final time on 31st May 1997 for the veterans side that played Old Centmodians Veterans as part of the Club’s 70th anniversary celebrations. In total, Chris made 215 appearances for Icklesham Casuals scoring 206 goals. He also played for Hastings Town and Rye United and the Robin Hood on Sunday.

Chris remained a supporter of the Club, attending all the celebrations and reunions to mark milestones in the Club’s history. He was present when the memorable photograph was taken at the start of the 75th anniversary season which included players from all the decades of the Club to that date and was in attendance at Westfield in May of this year when the veterans side took on Westfield Veterans in the final of the Hastings F A Veterans Cup.

Chris will always have a place in the history of Icklesham Casuals Football Club and the condolences of the Club go out to Chris’ family.

The funeral for Chris will be held at Hastings Crematorium on Friday, 21st November at 10.15 am.
